Mr Shashi Irukulla

Consultant Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon


Mr. Shashi Irukulla is an experienced General, Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgeon. He is currently a Consultant Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon at Ashford and St. Peter's Hospital NHS Trust in Chertsey, Surrey. He has private practice privileges at The Runnymede Hospital, Chertsey, Ashtead Hospital, Ashtead and Nuffield Hospital, Woking. Princess Margaret Hospital, Windsor and ClarePark Hospital in Farnham.


He has trained both in the United Kingdom and Australia. Following his general surgical training, he chose benign upper GI and Bariatric Surgery as his specialty. He has passion for bariatric surgery and upper GI dysmotility. He completed a Bariatric Fellowship Programme in a very busy bariatric unit at St. Georges Hospital, London. Whilst working at St.George’s Hospital he gained experience in carrying out primary and revision weight loss surgery. He also visited various European centers including Hamburg, Bruges and Rotterdam to further his knowledge in Bariatric Surgery.


He is a member of following societies:

He is a Local Negotiating Committee Member for the BMA


Mr. Irukulla is very keen on developing services both in the NHS and private sector. He developed Bariatric MDT services at Ashford & St. Peters Hospital and helped the hospital to achieve the status of an Independent Bariatric Centre. He has set up Oesophageal manometry and pH monitoring services and currently working on setting up Gastric Pacemaker service at Ashford & St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust. He has recently set up Upper GI Dysmotility Multi-Disciplinary Team which consists of upper GI surgeons, gastroenterologists, radiologists, endocrinologists and a nurse specialist.


Mr.Irukulla offers wide variety of surgical and endoscopic procedures. The most frequent general surgical procedures he undertakes are laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, laparoscopic hiatus hernia repair, laparoscopic inguinal and incisional hernia repairs, laparoscopic fundoplication, laparoscopic Heller’s procedure, LINX procedure and laparoscopic splenectomy. In addition to the above procedures he offers variety of weight loss procedures such as gastric balloon insertion, gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric banding. Mr. Irukulla submits his obesity surgery outcomes to National Bariatric Surgery Registry (NBSR) which can be accessed from nbsr.e-dendrite.com/. Mr. Irukulla strongly believes that better patient’s outcome is achieved through multi-disciplinary approach. He works with an experienced team of bariatric dietician, specialist nurse, metabolic physician and anaesthetists both in the NHS and in the private sector.


Mr. Irukulla has passion for teaching and training. He has recently taken Higher Surgical Trainee Supervisor role. He is a national A.T.LS. and CcRISP course faculty member. He is also an examiner in undergraduate medical examinations. He is a member of National Core Surgical Trainee selection panel.
